Associate Professor Philip Mottram is a clinical cardiologist and non invasive imaging specialist with expertise in all forms of echocardiography (TTE, stress and TOE) as well as cardiac CT. Associate Professor Mottram completed his undergraduate degree at Monash University with a high distinction, winning three prestigious university prizes. Phil completed his clinical cardiology training in 2000, followed by an 18-month fellowship in clinical echocardiology with the Department of Cardiology at Southern Health’s Monash Medical Centre Clayton. Dr Bon Chou – MBBS, FRACP, Cardiologist
Dr Bon Chou has extensive experience in the assessment of cardiac function with echocardiography. He has a particular interest in stress echocardiography for the assessment of patients at increased cardiovascular risk as well as those with chest pain syndromes or exertional dyspnoea where a cardiac cause may be suspected. Mr Stuart Cox – Lead Echocardiography Technologist
Prior to becoming the lead echocardiography technologist in May 2015, Stuart worked at MonashHeart as a cardiac technologist for almost 14 years. During this time he undertook extensive post graduate education in electrophysiology and cardiac ultrasound, with skills in all areas of cardiac technology including adult and paediatric congenital sonography. Stuart is currently undertaking a Masters in Cardiac Ultrasound by research with the Queensland University of Technology.
Mr Steve Farrell – AMS, Grad. Dip, Cardiac Ultrasound, Grad Dip. Critical Care Nursing, Chief Cardiac Technologist
Steve Farrell completed his nurse training in Edinburgh in 1989 and worked in coronary care and cardiothoracic intensive care units in both Scotland and Australia until 1997. During this period he obtained a Graduate Diploma in Critical Care Nursing and trained in cardiac technology. In 1997 he was employed as a cardiac technologist and was appointed chief cardiac technologist at Epworth Hospital from 1997 until 2007 during which time he obtained a Graduate Diploma in Cardiac Ultrasound. In 1998 he joined MonashHeart to learn paediatric echocardiography and has assisted in the training of students undertaking diploma courses in cardiac ultrasound. Steve was appointed as MonashHeart’s chief cardiac technologist in August 2015.
Dr John Gelman – MBBS(Hons), FRACP, FCSANZ, DDU, Cardiologist
Dr John Gelman is a senior visiting cardiologist at Monash Medical Centre and former director of echocardiology (1989-2007). He is a consultant cardiologist at Cabrini Hospital, Melbourne and directs a private multi-site echo service in Gippsland. John graduated from Monash University, trained at Prince Henry’s and The Alfred hospitals (including the Clinical Research Unit, Baker Institute) and completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Florida, USA. He has obtained the Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound and has been an examiner for ASUM. He is a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, invited journal reviewer and speaker at national and international echo courses and meetings. Dr Siobhan Lockwood is a consultant cardiologist with MonashHeart and a member of the MonashHeart non-invasive imaging service. Catherine Mylrea, AMS(Cardiac), Grad Dip Cardiac Ultrasound, Echocardiography Educator
Catherine commenced as echo educator in November 2008 having been a senior sonographer at MonashHeart for eight years. She has a special interest in performing echocardiograms on patients being assessed for interventional procedures such as septal ablation, closure devices, and percutaneous valve replacement/repair and then performing the ongoing follow-up echocardiogram.

Anthony Wald – BTech Cardiologist, ASAR, Point-of-Care Echocardiography Educator
Mr Anthony Wald qualified as a cardiac technologist in South Africa, subsequently working in Europe and Australia. He undertook the role of Chief Cardiac Technologist of MonashHeart for 10 years before becoming the point-of-care echocardiography educator for Monash Health in mid 2015.
Ms Jacqui Williamson – Echocardiography Educator
Ms Jacqui Williamson works closely with new echo trainees to develop the hands-on skills required to perform echocardiography. With a career in cardiac technology spanning 20 years, Jacqui has a breadth of experience in echo training having worked in both the public and private sectors providing training to sonographers, intensivists and anaesthetists. As a DMU examiner and invited speaker at national conferences, Jacqui has shown her passion for echo education and works hard to build the professional profile of cardiac sonography. Jacqui is currently completing a Master of Healthcare Leadership which will assist her in providing quality training and leadership to echo trainees and colleagues.
The MonashHeart cardiac technologist team has many years of echocardiography experience among its sonographers. MonashHeart is fortunate to have a number of highly skilled sonographers who are trained in both adult and paediatric cardiac sonography, putting MonashHeart in the unique position to manage a patient from birth until adulthood. The team is led by chief cardiac technologist Anthony Wald and education is led by echocardiography educator Catherine Mylrea.
