How do I make a booking?

Fax your doctors referral to 03 9554 8548 or scan and email your referral to monashheartbookings@monashhealth.org or post to any MonashHeart site. Please note bookings can not be made over the telephone.

What are my rights and responsibilities when receiving services?

Our staff work in partnership with consumers to achieve the best possible care. As a consumer, you will need to know what to expect from MonashHeart, our services and staff. It is also important for you to understand what your rights and responsibilities are when receiving our services. The Monash Health Rights and Responsibilities brochure outlines your rights and responsibilities as a consumer of MonashHeart health care services.

Where can I access an ATM?

All three MonashHeart sites have an ATM located in the hospital’s main foyer. A branch of the BankVic is located on level two of Monash Medical Centre Clayton (opposite Zouki cafe).

Where can my family or friends find nearby accommodation?
  • The Wright Street Flats provide motel style accommodation opposite Monash Medical Centre, Clayton for immediate family members or carers who reside 100 kilometres or more away. A flat can be booked by calling Social Work at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton on 03 9594 2290.
  • Ronald McDonald House, Monash is located next to Monash Medical Centre, Clayton and provides accommodation for the families of children attending for a cardiac procedure or children with a serious illness. Rooms can be booked by calling 03 9562 6223.
Where do I find the public café?

Zouki Café is located at all three of our sites and is open to the public from 6:00am to 8:00pm on weekdays and from 7.30am to 7:00pm on weekends (closed weekends at Casey Hospital).

Where do I get more information about my test or procedure?

We have developed a number of easy-to-read patient information booklets about many of our tests, procedures and heart conditions.

Where is MonashHeart?
  • MonashHeart Clayton is located at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton on level two. Enter via the main door of the hospital, turn left at the Café. MonashHeart is located down the corridor on the right.
  • MonashHeart Suite D is located on level two (street level) of Monash Medical Centre. Enter via the main entrance door of Monash Medical Centre, turn right towards the private consulting rooms. We are located at the end of the main corridor.
  • MonashHeart Dandenong is located at Dandenong Hospital on the third floor. Enter via the main door of the older Dandenong Hospital main building, take the lift on the left to the third floor. MonashHeart is on the right.
  • MonashHeart Casey is located at Casey Hospital on the ground floor opposite the Emergency Department. From the car park, enter via the door adjacent to the Emergency Department. MonashHeart is located immediately to the left of the corridor.

What if I (or the patient) does not understand or speak English?

MonashHeart has access to a large number of interpreters. Call 1300 MHEART (1300 643 278) at least a day before your appointment and select the site where your test or procedure will be performed. We will make arrangements for an interpreter to be present on the day of your test / procedure or for a telephone interpreter.

Are child care services available?

There are no child care services available at any of our sites. Please ask a friend or relative to look after your child/children when attending a test or procedure appointment.

Are parking facilities available at MonashHeart sites?

All three MonashHeart sites have public car parking facilities. Fees apply.
All three sites also have a patient drop-off area immediately outside the front door of the hospital.

Can I use my mobile phone while in MonashHeart?

We ask that you turn off your mobile phone when in MonashHeart to ensure it does not affect our sensitive cardiac equipment.

Each hospital has a Sacred Space where patients, visitors and staff of all religious denominations can visit day or night for prayer, meditation or quiet time.  Please ask a MonashHeart staff member for details.

I am in Australia on a visa and do not have a Medicare card. Can I have my tests done at MonashHeart, Melbourne? How much will it cost?

Yes, you can have your tests done at MonashHeart. Please contact the MonashHeart billing supervisor on 03 9554 8611 for details of costs and payment options.

Will I be billed for my test/procedure/cardiology consultation at MonashHeart Melbourne?

The following diagnostic cardiac tests are bulk billed through Medicare  (there is no cost  to the patient).

  • 12-lead ECG
  • loop event monitoring
  • Holter monitoring
  • exercise stress test
  • chest CT for cardiac procedures
  • cardiac ct
  • coronary angiogram
  • transthoracic echocardiography
  • transoesophageal echocardiography
  • exercise stress echocardiography
  • dobutamine echocardiography

An out-of-pocket fee is incurred for:

  • 24-hour blood pressure monitoring ($60) (no Medicare item number)
  • pacemaker and implantable cardiac device clinic
  • home monitoring of devices (annual fee) (no Medicare item number)
  • private consultation (with cardiologist or cardiac surgeon)
  • calcium score ($175), pensioners charged 50% ($87.50) (no Medicare item number)

What should I bring on the day of my appointment?

For all tests and procedures, please bring your Medicare card, healthcare card, private health insurance card and a list of current medications.

There is no need to bring anything special for simple tests such as:

  • Holter monitor 
  • Loop monitor
  • Pacemaker and ICD device monitoring clinic
  • 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Blood pressure monitor

For an exercise stress test or exercise stress echocardiogram please wear comfortable clothing and runners as these tests involve running on a treadmill.

For a day case cardiac catheterisation laboratory procedure, such as a pacemaker implant or coronary angiogram, there is no need to bring toiletries or night attire.

If your cardiac catheterisation laboratory procedure involves an overnight stay (eg coronary angioplasty) please bring toiletries, night attire, dressing gown and slippers.

While we try to book you in to the site most convenient for you, for a number of reasons, it may not be possible for you to have your test at the MonashHeart site of your choice.

How long will the test/procedure take and when can I drive?

The table below is a guide to the approximate duration of our tests and procedures; from preparation through to finishing the test/procedure and recovery. Times will vary according to individual needs i.e. a longer recovery time may be needed in some cases.

We have also provided guidelines regarding when you can drive. As some tests and procedures involve sedation and/or anaesthesia, you are often not allowed to drive until the next day. If you do drive and have an accident you may not be covered by your insurance or the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

Please note, unfortunately at times your procedure may be cancelled as a result of emergency cases presenting to the hospital. If we cancel at late notice, we sincerely apologise, and will re-book you for the next available time.

Will my cardiologist perform my test?

Many tests and procedures requested by your cardiologist are performed by a cardiac physiologist. However, results of your test or procedure will always be sent to your referring doctor, cardiologist, cardiac surgeon or general practitioner.

What can I do while my relative/friend is having their test/procedure?

You can wait in our waiting room while the test is being performed. Alternatively you can wait in the hospital café.

During a cardiac catheterisation laboratory procedure (i.e.: pacemaker / angiogram), one companion or carer can stay in the Immediate Care Centre, where pre- and post-procedure care is provided. Additional accompanying persons can wait in our waiting room or the hospital café. Please be informed that there are no play or childcare facilities at any of our sites.
