Dr Nasis wins inaugural award

Dr Arthur Nasis is the successful recipient of the inaugural Southern Health Senior Medical Staff Research Scholarship.

This $60,000 award, funded over three years, is designed to provide support to an outstanding early-career medical researcher to complete their PhD degree. Arthur is also the recipient of the prestigious combined National Health and Medical Research Council and National Heart Foundation Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

Arthur’s PhD will examine novel imaging techniques in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease and myocardial ischaemia. Specifically, it will be centred on novel clinical applications and image acquisition techniques utilising CT coronary angiography and stress echocardiography in various clinical settings, including acute chest pain in the Emergency Department.  It will also determine the accuracy and safety of CT myocardial perfusion imaging in the assessment of chest pain, which may allow cardiac CT to become a “one stop shop” for cardiac investigation. A very sophisticated series of studies have been planned which are expected to be internationally competitive with significant clinical ramifications.

Arthur has already published several papers and delivered multiple presentations at national and international meetings in this area. He has also completed an MD thesis entitled “The emerging role of 320-detector row computed tomography”. He will complete his PhD at MonashHeart, Monash Cardiovascular Research Centre under the co-supervision of Professor James Cameron, Professor Ian Meredith and Dr Philip Mottram.
