Cardiac technologists

The opportunities

MonashHeart is truly a unique workplace for cardiac technologists with an enthusiasm for working in a hugely diversified service. The most amazing of complex cardiac conditions are seen here every day; from the pregnant woman with heart failure, to the 25 year old with endocarditis, to the 60 year old with atrial myxoma.

As Steve one of our paediatric sonograghers said, "Where else do I get to go from scanning a 200kg patient to being urgently called to the neonatal intensive care unit to scan premature baby Taylor weighing just 400 grams?"

Education, training and research

Education of our cardiac technologist team is highly valued by the whole multidisciplinary team.

As a junior technologist you will progress through various stages of training from basic ECG interpretation through to the 'how to' of performing all the non-invasive physiology tests. Once you have mastered these skills a trainee will progress to training in the cardiac catheter laboratory. Here you will learn all about how to support the cardiologist while he/she is performing angiograms and placing stents. You are taught advanced life saving techniques and how to set-up and run equipment used during emergency heart attack cases. From this junction you are able to further specialise in cardiac rhythm management, electrophysiology or echocardiography.
